How it’s Made

The Process of Creating Oldskool Banners

How the Idea of Oldskool Banners Started

Oldskool Banners began as a passion project, one that initially had no clear direction. I didn't know how to structure the creation process, and it required extensive research and trial-and-error to bring the concept to life. I spent countless hours searching online for the right materials, asking questions like:

  • What kind of fabric should I use?

  • What type of backing would work best for the banners?

  • What method should I use to hang them?

The brainstorming phase lasted for weeks as I sketched ideas, tested different materials, and experimented with sample designs. One major challenge was learning how to sew, a skill I had no prior experience with. Fortunately, my mother-in-law, an experienced seamstress, guided me through the process, teaching me in the basement of my home. Through trial, patience, and practice, I refined my skills and turned my vision into a tangible product.

The Process of Making Oldskool Banners

  • Designing the Illustration – The process begins by creating the artwork that will be heat-pressed onto the front side of the banner.

  • Ordering Fabric – Selecting and ordering the right fabric to print on, followed by running test prints to ensure quality.

  • Gathering Materials – Ordering essential components such as black fringe, wooden sticks, and rope to construct the hanging structure.

  • Learning & Sewing – Mastering sewing techniques and attaching the black fringe to the banner for a finished look.

  • Printing the Backing – The backside of the banner is printed with an oldskool pattern by Colonial Flag.

  • Double Stitching – Carefully sewing the front and back sides together using double stitching for durability.

  • Adding the Hanging Structure – Attaching the wooden sticks and rope to create the final hanging mechanism.

  • Final Touches – Inspecting, refining, and ensuring each banner meets the desired aesthetic and quality before it is ready for display.

The Purpose Behind Oldskool Banners

I created Oldskool Banners to preserve and celebrate the oldskool aesthetic, bringing nostalgic and meaningful artwork into everyday spaces. These banners serve as a visual tribute to the past, allowing individuals to express their connection to oldskool culture. Whether hung in a home, office, or personal space, each banner embodies the essence of classic styles and artistic expression. My goal is to create something that resonates with people, keeping the oldskool spirit alive through unique, handcrafted designs.
